In my talk, I will describe experiences as a climbing ranger at Mount Rainier National Park and highlight overlaps between attempting a rescue in the wilderness and attempting the rescues that we respond to in the writing center. Concepts of preparation, communication, self-care, labor, and processing trauma will frame my discussion of first response in both places. Title: Active Outreach to Encourage Persistence among ESOL Students

Presenter: Channah Lohman

This study examines effects of active outreach on ESOL attendance of Daytona State College’s Writing Center over 3-month intervals before and after outreach began. The pre-outreach interval had no ESOL appointments. The interval after implementing outreach via tutor-led presentations and tours saw ESOL students book 209 appointments to encompass 14.8% of the Center’s appointments and 8% of its clientele. This session will represent these findings in Powerpoint to affirm active outreach’s importance to ESOL persistence.
