A Roundtable on Neurodiversity in Writing Centers

This roundtable explores how writing centers can better support students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), many of whom are also neurodivergent. Traditional tutoring practices may not fully meet these students’ needs, leading to unsatisfied sessions between both the student and tutor. The direct focus of this roundtable will explore how writing centers can become more inclusive and responsive to different ways of assessing neurodivergence as well those who resonate under the umbrella term for IEP.

Come and hear the story of our year. Are we more than data in the eyes of our administration? Is our story coming through at all? Are we going to embrace or resist artificial intelligence? Can we do both? At the limits of our work, maybe we remembered what makes us real and really matter. Let me tell you what we learned and then we will brainstorm ways to keep it for CUNY writing centers.

Supporting Reading in the Writing Center

This workshop will introduce participants to research on the role of reading in writing center tutoring. Participants will learn reading comprehension strategies from Alice Horning’s “Reading: Securing Its Place in the Writing Center” and subsequently apply them to a brief reading by Ellen Carillo titled “Reading With Purpose in the Writing Center”. I will encourage interaction and engagement through group discussions of the text and reflection on personal tutoring experiences

Bridging the Gap: How Schools Offering Tutoring Allow Disadvantaged Students to Succeed.

My vision is how statistics of students in poverty tend not succeed. I will give reasons why, and show statistics of how students who receive tutoring do better. I will display the average price of a private tutor and end with testimonies from students on how school sponsored tutoring has helped them. After the presentation, I will open the discussion to questions and comments.

More Than a Session: What Makes College Discovery Tutoring at BCC Special

This interactive workshop highlights what makes the College Discovery Tutoring Center at BCC special—from its roots in the civil rights movement to its innovative, game-based future. Tutors will lead mini-presentations on key practices (weekly sessions, CRLA training, ELL support) and experience a sample game-based activity. Materials include sticky notes, slide visuals, and digital tools. Participants will walk away with new strategies and a deeper appreciation for the power of human connection in tutoring.
