This poster presentation will focus on the autoethnographic story of the transition from undergraduate tutor to faculty tutor and the perceived power dynamics that come with this trajectory. The speaker will then discuss yielding leadership and agency to the tutee regardless of the tutor’s level of experience.

“We Been Knew”: Black Peer Tutors as Knowledge Keepers and Cultural Interpreters

This session explores how Black peer tutors serve as knowledge keepers in tutoring spaces, offering cultural insight, affirmation, and support that extends far beyond academic content. Through a race-conscious lens, it examines the intellectual and emotional labor Black tutors perform and argues for institutional recognition of their work. Attendees will gain insights on how to shift tutoring center culture and training to honor the knowledge these tutors bring.

The Expanding World of Tutoring: Tutoring Associations

Tutoring associations represent ways for teachers and tutoring centers to connect with others for enrichment and support. Tutoring associations help tutoring centers expand their experiences outside their local colleges and universities. This session will begin by discussing what tutoring associations are and why they are important in the field of tutoring. Then we will examine some of the associations that are available. Finally, we will discuss how to join any of these associations.

Through compelling anecdotes, practical examples, and interactive discussion, the presentation advocates for increased participation and shares strategies for maximizing the value of conference experiences.
